Description:
Part of the Kitohcikewan collaboration between The Griffen Trio, the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra, St. Mary’s Wellness Center.
There is Music All Around is based on Sound Walks taken at St. Mary’s Wellness and Education Centre during November 2017. The students were asked to identify sounds in the St. Mary’s environment, and then try and duplicate those sounds using everyday items (found instruments). Some of these sounds: Road Sounds (Cars Honking, Bus Brakes, Bus Door, and the sound of tires on pavement) and Snow Sounds footsteps on snow, water dripping, ice cracking, birds) were included in the final version of the piece.
During the performance the students performing the found instruments should be in two small groups separate from the rest of the choir, one group for the “road sounds” at rehearsal C, and another for the “snow sounds” at rehearsal F. Each small group should be two or three students each playing only one found instrument. Students should start their sounds one at a time, beginning with the sound the most quiet, and adding until everyone is playing.
Once everyone is playing, the next section can be cued and the found instruments stop playing. If possible, the two small groups should be amplified in order to properly hear the sounds.
Text:
When you listen with your eyes
There is music all around
When you listen with your heart
There is music all around
When your school is near a road you hear: (Road sounds made by students on found instruments: Cars Honking, Bus Brakes, Bus Door, and the sound of tires on pavement)
There is music in a road
When you listen to the land
There is music all around
When you listen to the sky
There is music all around
When your school is near the snow you hear: (Snow sounds made by students on found instruments: footsteps on snow, water dripping, ice cracking, birds)
There is music in the snow
When you listen to your voice Kitochikawin When you listen to yourself Kitochikawin
When your school is filled with voices you hear singing. There is music in our voice
