Duration: 12:30

Price: $30

Description:

This piece was commissioned by Tommy Davis and the Proteus Quartet in 2017.
Each movement is a glimpse into the lives of different groups of peoples from early Western Manitoba; from fishermen to sisters, water travellers to old folks and dancers, each group its own clash of individuals and cluster of personalities.

The movements are based on different fiddle tune that were popular in western Manitoba during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In some movements the tunes are changed quite drastically, almost to the point where they are unrecognizable (as in Mov. 2 Three Sisters, Mov. 3 Cloudy Waters, Mov. 5 Broom Dance) and some stay closer to the source material (Mov.1 Fishin Reel and Mov. 4 Growling Old Woman and Grumbling Old Men).
